For Emergency Preparedness Month in October, SELCO donated 400 flashlights to the Senior Center and Council on Aging for their Emergency Preparedness kits and event, helping local seniors prepare for storm-related power outages. At the event, SELCO staff hosted a table, offering essential tips on staying safe and connected during storms. We discussed steps for preparing before, during, and after a storm and highlighted the importance of signing up for power outage notifications via SmartHub.
Key Storm Preparation Tips
Before the Storm:
- Place flashlights and extra batteries in accessible spots around your home.
- Store non-perishable food and water for potential long-term outages.
- If you rely on electric-powered medical equipment, contact SELCO at 508-841-8500 to ensure your needs are noted in our system.
During the Storm:
- Avoid using gas ranges for heating and refrain from burning charcoal indoors, as these release toxic fumes.
- Call SELCO’s outage line at 508-841-8500 if your power goes out, and remember to turn off appliances to prevent overloads when power is restored.
- Leave a light switch on to alert you when the power is back on.
- If your house may be without heat for an extended period and the outside temperature is below freezing, drain your water pipes.
- Never touch any fallen lines or anything touching fallen wires. Report all fallen wires to SELCO at 508-841-8500.
After the Storm:
- Check your home’s wiring and appliances for damage before use. Do not use water-damaged electric items until a qualified electrician has inspected them and ensured they are safe.
- Steer clear of downed lines, always assuming they are live, and report any fallen wires immediately. Never touch any fallen lines or anything touching fallen wires. Report all fallen wires to SELCO at 508-841-8500.
- Gradually reconnect your appliances to avoid overloading circuits when power is restored.
