SELCO - Shrewsbury Electric & Cable Operations

For more than a century, SELCO has been an integral part of the Shrewsbury community. Established by a vote of Town Meeting on March 2, 1908, the Shrewsbury Municipal Light Plant was founded on the belief that essential utility services should be owned by the people they serve. 

 

Today, SELCO continues that tradition of local ownership by providing electricity, high-speed fiber internet, streaming television, and phone services with a focus on exceptional value, dependable service, and long-term investment in the community. As a not-for-profit utility, every surplus dollar is reinvested locally, helping customers save thousands compared to neighboring investor-owned utilities while strengthening the infrastructure, programs, and services that benefit Shrewsbury.

Community-Owned

Unlike investor-owned utilities, SELCO is owned by the community, not shareholders. Local leadership, employees, and public oversight ensure decisions are made with the best interests of Shrewsbury in mind, with every investment focused on the best interests of the Town of Shrewsbury.

Through investments in fiber internet, electric grid modernization, clean energy initiatives, and community programs, SELCO delivers value beyond utility services while building a strong future for the residents, businesses, and community it serves.

SELCO / NESN Scholarship

Shrewsbury resident seniors, attending public or private high school, are encouraged to apply for one of three $1,000 scholarships offered by SELCO and New England Sports Network (NESN).


These scholarships are awarded based on community involvement, good citizenship, volunteer work inside and outside of school, a recommendation from an advisor or guidance counselor, financial need, and a statement of personal goals and aspirations.

Share The Warmth

Each year SELCO asks the community to support Share the Warmth, a program that assists Shrewsbury residents in need with funding to maintain electric service for heat, light and hot water through the cold winter months. Each year the community responds kindly. There is no deadline, donations are accepted year-round.

 

100% of funds donated to Share the Warmth go directly to assist Shrewsbury families and seniors that are having difficulty affording heat and electricity during the winter months.

 

If you are in need of assistance this year, Share the Warmth applications are available at Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services, St. Anne’s Community Services, the First Congregational Church, St. Mary’s Church, and at the Shrewsbury Council on Aging Senior Center. All Share the Warmth applications must be received at the SELCO office by March 1.

Annual Community Open House

The SELCO Community Open House is an annual event held at the SELCO Service Area. Anyone in the community is welcome to attend.


The Open House give community members and there families an opportunity to:

    • Climb aboard SELCO vehicles and gear up with free safety hats and vests for the kids.
  • Tesla Test Drives
    • Experience electric vehicles firsthand and see what the future of driving feels like.
  • Meet the Sheep
    • Visit our solar farm sheep—yes, you can pet and feed them!
  • Free Popcorn & Kids Activities
    • Enjoy bounce houses, inflatable games, and fun for all ages.
  • Info Booths
    • Learn about Fiber Internet, SELCO Stream, and Smart Meters.
  • Energy & Public Power Info
    • Talk with our team about rebates, energy programs, and how community-owned power benefits Shrewsbury.

Annual Arbor/Earth Day Event

Each year SELCO sponsors a town-wide Earth Day celebration to encourage the community to plant trees.  SELCO has given away more than 12,000 free trees to the Shrewsbury community since 2004.

 

Trees can actually improve the energy efficiency of a building if planted in the right location. 

  • Shade trees planted to the South and West of your home can reduce cooling costs 15%-35% 

  • Planting evergreen trees along the North and West edge of your yard will form a windbreak and can help reduce heating costs by 10%-20% 

  • Carefully positioned trees can save up to 25% of a household’s energy consumption for heating and cooling.
